Objectives

I am currently completing the Book Studies certificate in conjunction with my MLIS at the University of Iowa. Together, these will allow me to combine hands-on, intimate knowledge of the book with the practical skills and framework to become a steward of information. I hope to expand my knowledge of the physical book, while learning more about digital archives and collections care. In learning more about conservation and preservation, I aim to explore the place of the book in an increasingly digital age, and expand accessibility to information and explore the boundaries of materiality.

Inclusivity

Special collection libraries have often been seen as a place of mystery and secrecy, where you have to know unsaid rules and come with a purpose to be granted access. By viewing librarianship as a custodial position rather than one of a gatekeeper, I aim to welcome those who have been left out, or didn't know special collections were available to them. I want to not only welcome guests into the environment, but help them navigate a new system, providing information and context for what they're interacting with, and challenge presumed narratives.
